Former Miss Dassel to share 35 W bridge story

This week I received a call from Michele (Rosin) McLane. She informed me she was on the 35 W bridge when it went down in August. Before our interview she had me watch her 30-minute video and testimony of that event. McLane will be at the Dassel Covenant Church Jan. 6 for those interested in seeing her video. See story in Monday’s paper for more info.  Anyway, she says in her video that before that day, the bridge didn’t have a name. Now, that bridge is known as the 35W Bridge. It will be referred to that forever, same with 9/11 and other tragic events that made history.

Tickets will be issued during next snowstorm

The Cokato City Council instructed the Wright County Sheriff’s Office to issue real tickets — not warnings, as it has been before — for those who are parked after 2 a.m. along public roads that need to be plowed.

Teachers/board continue negotiation talks

The teachers and the school board have yet to agree on a contract settlement. The teachers feel they took a below average settlement two years ago because of the financial uncertainties of the district. The board and negotiating team will meet Sunday night to see what they can come up with. See full story in Monday’s paper.

FBI investigation probably a ‘big nothing’

About eight to 10 FBI agents descended on the Meeker County Courthouse and Law Enforcement Center this week. The news media is buzzing about it, even the big outlets. Neither the County Attorney Stephanie Beckman nor Paul McCabe, the communications director for the Minneapolis FBI’s office, is allowed to say anything about what the investigation is about. It’s too bad no one can say anything, because it makes it sound worse than it probably is. Their silence makes people’s imagination run wild. Also, it’s not uncommon for the FBI to interview several people at the same time, so the people being interviewed can’t collude on their stories. It doesn’t mean that a big crime occurred because eight to 10 agents are gathering information, instead of one or two.

What now?

What kind of curriculum should the high school add with the passing of the levy?  Should there be more shop?  home ec?  foreign language?

Here’s an ingenious idea for firefighters

Dassel’s fire department will be looking into grant money for getting dry hydrants hooked up to area lakes. Dry hydrants have no water in them, but they have pipes underground that are connected to lakes. If an out of town fire gets so big that the firefighters run out of water, instead of driving all the way back to Dassel to get more, firefighters drive to the nearest dry hydrant and hook up the pumper truck to it. The pump pulls water from the lake into the pipes and ultimately into the tank of the truck. Dassel firefighters go all the way out to Kingston and Darwin, and all places in between so this is a great time-saver for them.

City of Dassel has snazzy technology

You should see the smart board technology the city of Dassel is using at its council meetings in city hall. Residents can observe their city council meetings live on cable TV from the comfort of their own homes. It’s great for cold winter nights when you want to know what’s going on at city council, but don’t want to go outside to get to city hall. There are two big display screens set up in the council chambers. One faces the audience, so the audience can see what the TV audience sees. The other display faces the council members, so they also can see what the TV audience sees. City administrator Myles McGrath controls what shows on the displays and the cable TV broadcast by a computer mounted on a podium. Last night, was the first time I saw the cameras, Power Point presentation, and TV all work together at the same time.
