Road Rage?

Since writing the article about DC Commuters, I am wondering if anyone has seen Road Rage. So, I will ask the question “Have you seen any incidences of Road Rage on your way to work?”

Taping of school board meetings

The DC School Board is researching for ways to record meetings and broadcast them for public viewing. In order for there to be a quality recording, proper equipment would have to be purchased which the cable company doesn’t provide. The board could choose to move the meetings to city hall, but this is not ideal since they would have to rotate between the two towns. Only a handful of citizens have requested this as a communication tool. I’m just wondering if there is enough interest out there for the board to do this? Would people watch it or request a tape of the board meetings?

DC is not perfect

The ED recently received a complaint that there is too much negative news in the paper. We live in a great community where there isn’t a lot of crime reported, but just like any place in this fine country, there are some criminals and it’s the paper’s job to report them. When there is criminal activity, it is only fair the public knows so they can be cautious. There is a fair amount of positive news in the paper that offsets the negative. Sorry to those who think the newspaper should be all roses and peaches, but life is not.

A report card on plowing - who does, doesn’t

I drive through several cities every day in order to get to work, and therefore have a splendid vantage point of who gets plowed out first or last, working as I do for two newspapers.

Dassel gets plowed out last, and usually it takes a lot of snow before anyone thinks of plowing anything. This has always been true. I’ve risked my life to pick up my kids at daycare so that I can “get home and stay home” in the first place. It’s almost comical turning off of Highway 12 — which is plowed first and best by state crews based out of Buffalo in Wright County — to Dassel city limits, where you traverse wagon wheel ruts and risk getting stuck with a carload of scared kids.

Cokato, on the other hand, is plowed out neat as a pin, super early. Ken Bakke and his team are out there, one step ahead of every snowflake. Howard Lake is also in very fine shape by the morning time, working their buns off to make roads clear.

Wright County Road 6 (going south) is usually scary and not plowed well. I’ve seen cars in ditches on a regular basis there, over the years. This may not be considered a primary road for the plowing crews (?) and therefore, crews might be busy digging out roads with heavier traffic.

They have lost everything

The Dassel house that was burned today (Friday) is uninhabitable and the Palm family (as a blended family — four boys, and I believe three girls) have lost their clothes and belongings, including Christmas presents. I can’t forget that wet ashtray smell that floats near our house, even now, which is located just over the railroad from theirs. As the crow flies, their house is less than a mile from ours. The Red Cross and Salvation Army are taking care of their immediate needs, but their clothes and numerous other belongings will need to be replaced at a cost. Please consider even a small donation to them — send to Wells Fargo, PO Box 387, Dassel, MN 55325.

Looking forward to relaxing on Christmas

There seems to have been so much running around and hurrying to get things done before Christmas that a person can forgot to be joyous and appreciate this time of year. It will be gone before we know it after all. Though I may not be ready as far as having all my gifts purchased and cookies baked, I am ready for the day to come just so I can relax and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas with my family. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas and God Bless.

Blog change coming soon

In the near future, we will be splitting our blog into two sections — an “ED News Log” which will be strictly for factual news updates; along with the existing blog which will allow commentary on subjects from both staff members and readers.

We are making this change to better separate the division between factual information and opinion. Our staff members will be posting to both blogs on a regular basis, so check back frequently to see what’s new.

Ice Fishing Play (not musical) for mature audience

To forewarn parents who are expected to get a Suessical-type show, the upcoming “Ice Fishing Play” is meant to be enjoyed by adults. We deserve that once in awhile! Although humorous, the play does touch on some mature subjects and uses some mature language not suitable for young ears.  Think of this as a PG-13 play. Tickets are on sale and the show begins next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Other show times are New Year’s Eve at 9 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. Purchase tickets for $12 ($15 for special New Year’s Eve show) at Community Ed 286-4120.  Enjoy the play at the Ergot building in Dassel!
