Wright County receives a wide range of bids for projects

The value of competitive bidding was clearly demonstrated during Tuesday’s Wright County board meeting.

Bid openings for two projects were conducted during the meeting.
The first was for CSAH 17 tree clearing and surcharge improvements.

Eight bids were received, ranging from $695,786 to $1,051,818, a difference of $356,032. The engineer’s estimate for the project was $725,000. The average of the bids received was $904,025.

The second bid opening was for the 2007 street lighting improvement project, which will include installation of street lights at 12 intersections.

Seven bids were received ranging from $177,007 to $271,000, a difference of $93,993.
The engineer’s estimate for the project was $178,500.

Homes in east Cokato need house numbers

Yesterday I interviewed Rod Stewart about his World War II experiences for a story in the Enterprise Dispatch Nov. 5. On the way to his house in east Cokato, I noticed several homes around Edgewood Gables that have no name or house numbers on them at all. This is really dangerous. If there is an emergency, an ambulance or fire truck will have difficulty locating the address. If you or a family member have no house number or name on your mailbox, get one as soon as possible. The individual numerals can be bought at any hardware store. If you can’t install them yourself, ask if a volunteer from your church or a local service organization can help you attach the numbers to your house.

Haunted House in Hutchinson

Saturday night, a group of friends and I went to the haunted house in Hutchinson. It was sponsored by the Jaycees and the fire department. It was actually set up at their training facility. There were two houses, creepy as ever. It’s been awhile since I was at a haunted house. It was $8 to get in, less if you brought in food for the food shelf. That night alone they had 300 visitors and made approximately $2,400. Maybe next year, DC could think of doing something like this. The teenagers would get a kick out of it. It was definitely worth $8. I could’ve lived without the real dead pig heads though.

Fire strikes Ahlgrens southwest of Dassel

No injuries were reported at a fire that struck the Dave and Mary Ahlgren farm today, Sunday late afternoon. One large outbuilding, which contained primarily round bales of hay, was heavily damaged, but the blaze was contained by the Dassel Fire Department, with some help from Litchfield and Hutchinson, from spreading to other buildings close by.

Fulfillment Systems to build again in Dassel?

Dale Miller of Proworks in Dassel hinted Thursday that Fulfillment Systems might build a second building in Red Rooster Industrial Park. Miller was telling the Cokato Dassel Rotary in Daniel’s Family Restaurant of Cokato what Proworks clients do at the Fulfillment Systems’ facility. The clients fold and repackage returned clothing (more about Proworks will be in a story in the Nov. 5 Enterprise Dispatch.) He told how unusually large-sized the clothes are. Miller said some of the garments are 6X! He added that Fulfillment Systems is keeping the Proworks clients busy, and that there’s a possibility the company will expand or build a second building there. Dassel City Administrator Myles McGrath said awhile back that Fulfillment Systems is shouldering a hefty share of Dassel’s tax burden because the building is so nice. Dassel residential property taxes are relatively high. If Fulfillment Systems builds another structure as nice as the first, it will ease some of the pressure on Dassel residential property taxpayers. Let’s hope Miller is right.

Spectralytics might expand closer to Dassel

There’s a possibility that Spectralytics of Dassel will expand at the intersection of Highways 12 and 15, rather than north, in the area of 235th St. The proposed ice arena site at the intersection was deeded back to the city of Dassel, so is now available for other uses.I hope the rumor is true. It will be good to have Spectralytics closer to the heart of Dassel.

SCARY-BOO!

With Halloween coming, there has been more and more talk on the radio about scary things like ghosts in photos and Ouija boards. Yesterday, KQ 92 talked about photos with ghosts in them. They can be viewed on the web site. They’re FREAKY, but I love that stuff. This morning, a listener called in to KS 95. Her kids once played with the Ouija board and her house was then filled with “spooks.” Radios came on, doors slammed shut, she even had to tell a female ghost to go away. I love Halloween! What I want to know is, are there any ghosts in DC?

Corcoran housing plan on agenda in Dassel

Dassel Planning Commission will try again tonight to meet about Mike Corcoran’s plans for a housing development on the south shore of Spring Lake. The commission was supposed to meet two weeks ago but only two of the members showed up. I’m curious about Corcoran’s plans. There doesn’t seem to be enough land on the south shore for housing. Highway 12 is right there, and some of the land looks swampy. We will have the full story Oct. 29 in the Enterprise Dispatch.
