WACONIA, MN – More than 100 people gathered at the site of the 2 millionth acre of wetland in the US to be enrolled in the Wetlands Reserves Program west of Waconia.

Several US senators and state representatives sent a spokesperson on their behalf to the celebration to congratulate the people who made this milestone possible.

The site is located just west of Lake Waconia, which is a popular recreational lake in Waconia Township. The goal is to restore the land back to its original state, which will create benefits such as improved water quality, enhanced water storage, increased wildlife habitat and open space preservation.

The large 73.2-acre parcel of land is owned by Donald and Barbara Wagener, with an adjoining 6.3-acre site owned by Ronald and Miriam Hilk. Through a permanent easement arrangement, Wagener and Hilk will continue to own the property.
