Cokato Kernels to begin Region 12C playoffs Thursday, Aug. 6 in Delano

COKATO, MN – The Cokato Kernels enter the Region 12C Amateur Baseball tournament as the seventh seed, and will face the favored Howard Lake Orphans in the first round of the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at Delano Municipal Ballpark. The Orphans are seeded second in the tournament.

“We are just excited and proud to be able to play in the region tournament. It’s a big deal for us and shows that we are making strides to being a more consistent team,” said Cokato Manager Nick Corbin of his 9-13 Kernels. “I expect Howard Lake will be at their best and it will be a fun challenge for us.”

Corbin may be claiming the “just happy to be here” mentality for the Kernels, who enter as the No. 7 seed against the favored No. 2 Orphans, but Howard Lake knows better than any North Star League team to not take the Kernels lightly.

The Orphans finished with a 17-5 record during the regular season. Two of those five losses came courtesy of Cokato. “Cokato was the only team in our league to beat us twice this year so we will definitely come ready to play,” said Howard Lake Manager Mike Gagnon. The Kernels topped the Orphans 4-3 June 21 and then 3-2 in 12 innings July 10.
