Chargers honor memory of teammate ‘MacDons’; 5K run/walk scheduled for Oct. 7

Friday’s 54-7 Charger football victory over Watertown-Mayer was bittersweet.

While a win is always welcome, the date (Sept. 21) marked the nearly-one-year anniversary of a heartbreaking tragedy for the team.

It was Sept. 22 of last year when it was announced that sophomore linebacker Jacob MacDonald had passed away following an allergic nut reaction.

On Friday, the team honored Jacob’s memory with a moment of silence prior to the game, and set his uniform (#34) on a stand near the bench. Throughout the game, teammates celebrated big moments or reverantly reflected with the vacant jersey.

MacDonald’s number will be retired through the end of next season, what would have been his senior year.

In remembrance of Jacob, his parents, Bonni and Marcus Halverson, will be holding a 5K Fun Run/Walk on October 7 entitled “Jacob’s Way of Life 5K.”

Online registration is available at (Event name Jacob’s Way of Life 5K Run/Walk). Registration is $20 and includes a t-shirt, race number, chip timing and lunch.

You can also register online if you are not participating in the run/walk but would like a t-shirt and lunch.

If you are unable to attend the event, but would like to make a donation, please send it to Kensington Bank, PO Box 220, Cokato MN, 55321. Checks can be made payable to: Jacob’s Way of Life 5K. You can also find out more information on Facebook (search “Jacob’s Way of Life”).

All proceeds will go to a local family or families in need, and the Jacob MacDonald Memorial Scholarship.

Bonni Halverson reported that already, over 400 participants have signed up for the event, a testament to the impact of Jacob’s life.
