Charger boys basketball team defeats New London-Spicer

COKATO – Jackson Schrupp hit an and-one layup with 23 seconds left, and moments later saved a last-second inbound pass, to help the Chargers defeat visiting New London-Spicer 55-54 Tuesday.

DC trailed by nine at the break, 33-24, but clawed their way back in the second half behind 13 second half points from Eli Gillman.

“We talked at halftime about cleaning up defensively and not giving up offensive rebounds, and continuing to push aggressively on offense,” said Dehler. “Today we executed on both ends of the floor at the end of the game, which was something we had struggled with.”

The Chargers trailed 47-42 with eight minutes left, but Gabe Aamot stole an inbounds pass for a bucket, Elijah Aamot scored inside, and Eli Gillman hit a long jumper to put DC up 48-47.

The Wildcats (7-4) hit an and-one to go up 50-48, but Gillman tied the score on a drive to the hoop, and Kasen Warner stole an inbounds pass to put DC up 52-50.

NLS then hit two free throws to tie the game 52-52 with 1:32 left, and after a DC miss, the Wildcats hit two freethrows with 28 seconds left to take a 54-52 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Caleb Thinesen hit Jackson Schrupp with a long, perfect bounce pass, and Schrupp converted the layup and was fouled.

He hit the free throw to give DC a 55-54 lead.

NLS worked it inside, but Elijah Aamot had a big block with 8.5 seconds left to keep the Chargers’ lead intact.

On the ensuing inbound, the Wildcats missed a long two, and the ball was thrown out of bounds with 1.4 seconds left.

On their ensuing inbound, DC heaved the ball downcourt, and Schrupp saved it inbounds to Thinesen to cap the victory.
