Beach at Dog Lake temporarily closed

The Dog Lake beach at Oscar and Anna Johnson County Park is temporarily closed due to a safety issue.
According to Marc Mattice, Director of Parks and Recreation for Wright County, a gathering on Dog Lake last winter was broken up by the Wright County Sheriff’s Department.
The group was directed to clean up the refuse left on the lake, but apparently instead burned the refuse, drilled a hole, and disposed of the materials in the lake.
This spring while inspecting the swimming beach for hazards prior to public use, a Wright County staff noticed numerous nails in the swimming area below the water mark, Mattice said. The staff person proceeded to hand pick as many as possible, but after further review of the site, the department closed the swimming beach until further cleanup could occur.
Staff will use a sweeper magnet to complete a full sweep out to six feet of water, and will need to turn the sand layer and repeat the sweep to ensure hazards have been removed, Mattice said.

Carver County Sheriff Jason Kamerud reports that on 05/27/20 at 7:16 AM his Office received a 9-1-1 call of suspcious activity at 17535 Highway 7, in the parking lot of the Cenex gas station.

The reporting party said that an adult male was acting strange and walking around with a hammer. It was also reported that he had pulled a female truck driver out of her truck the previous evening, but she was gone when deputies arrived and the report has not yet been corroborated. He also reportedly was waving the hammer, threatening passers by.

After striking the pumps, the man continued to attempt to flee in his semi and became disabled/stuck in the ditch to Minnesota Highway 7.

Trained negotiators and a mental health crisis therapist engaged the man in lengthy negotiations before the man eventually surrendered and came out of the truck to be secured by authorities. The man was taken to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia for evaluation.

The matter remains under investigation by Carver County Sheriff’s Office.

Carver County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by Minnesota State Patrol, Ridgeview Ambulance, New Germany Fire Department, Tri-City SWAT Team and the Carver County Mental Health Crisis Team.
