WINSTED, MN – Jonathan Menden, son of Rick and Sheryl Menden of Winsted, recently earned the highest award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award.
He was recognized at a National Eagle Scout Court of Honor Sept. 21 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winsted.
Jonathan, a member of Boy Scout Troop 399 in Winsted, is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. He is the 16th member of Troop 399 to earn the award since 2002.
To earn the rank of Eagle, the Scout must be active in his troop and patrol for at least six months as a Life Scout, demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life. serve actively in an approved position of responsibility, and plan, develop, and lead others in carrying out a service project worthy of an Eagle Scout.
The Scout must earn 21 merit badges to become an Eagle Scout, including the 12 that are required: First Aid, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizen in the World, Communications, Personal Fitness, Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving, Environmental Science, Personal Management, Swimming, Hiking or Cycling, and Camping and Family Life.
Jonathan Menden earned 24 merit badges. His Eagle Scout project benefited St. John’s Lutheran Church. He built and landscaped the retaining walls that compliment the church’s new addition.
Jonathan has served the troop as quartermaster and patrol leader. He is active in his church, school, and the community.
