Local royalty go to Montrose Days

MONTROSE, MN – Local royalty enjoyed getting together during Montrose Days recently.

It’s a small world after all

AL ASAD, IRAQ – Two local Marines, Lt. Col. John Peterson and Cpl. Chris Gudvangen, both of Waverly, ran into each other last month while at Marine Corps Air Station Al Asad, Iraq.
Cpl. Gudvangen’s unit, H & S Company, recently returned from Iraq to Twenty Nine Palms, Calif., and he will be home on leave around Friday, Oct 3.
Lt. Col. Peterson is stationed with 3D MAW Fwd out of Miramar, Calif., and will be returning to Minnesota early next year.
Cpl. Gudvangen is the son of Kathy and Norm Jerde of Waverly and the late Lonny Gudvangen of Montrose, and is a 2004 graduate of Buffalo High School.
Lt. Col. Peterson is the son of Arleen and Wallace Peterson, and husband of Colleen Peterson, all of Waverly. He is a 1981 graduate of Buffalo High School.

Jonathan Menden earned Eagle Scout award

WINSTED, MN – Jonathan Menden, son of Rick and Sheryl Menden of Winsted, recently earned the highest award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award.

He was recognized at a National Eagle Scout Court of Honor Sept. 21 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winsted.

Jonathan, a member of Boy Scout Troop 399 in Winsted, is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. He is the 16th member of Troop 399 to earn the award since 2002.

To earn the rank of Eagle, the Scout must be active in his troop and patrol for at least six months as a Life Scout, demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life. serve actively in an approved position of responsibility, and plan, develop, and lead others in carrying out a service project worthy of an Eagle Scout.

The Scout must earn 21 merit badges to become an Eagle Scout, including the 12 that are required: First Aid, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizen in the World, Communications, Personal Fitness, Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving, Environmental Science, Personal Management, Swimming, Hiking or Cycling, and Camping and Family Life.

Jonathan Menden earned 24 merit badges. His Eagle Scout project benefited St. John’s Lutheran Church. He built and landscaped the retaining walls that compliment the church’s new addition.

Jonathan has served the troop as quartermaster and patrol leader. He is active in his church, school, and the community.

MOMS Club hosts open house Oct. 24

BUFFALO, MN – The Moms Offering Moms Support (MOMS) Club is hosting a fall membership open house Friday, Oct. 24 in the Parish Hall at St. Francis Xavier Church, located at 300 First Avenue NW in Buffalo.
The club is for stay-at-home moms in the Buffalo, Rockford, Delano, and Montrose area.
The open house will include food and beverages, crafts, games, door prizes, and the opportunity for new friendships for moms and their children.
There is no fee to attend the event, which is open to the public.

Bergen Busy Bees 4-H Club begin club celebration Oct. 5

LESTER PRAIRIE, MN – The Lester Prairie Bergen Busy Bees 4-H Club encourages everyone to join them in celebrating National 4-H Week, Sunday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 11. The group will be hosting several events open to the public, whether interested in joining 4-H or not.
The Bergen Busy Bees will be decorating the window at Angvall Hardware and Mercantile in Lester Prairie Sunday, Oct. 5.
Then, at 2 p.m. they will be at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie for a presentation by Raymond Warren of Brooklyn Center. Warren is a Shriner clown named Cocoa, and will describe what it’s like. The presentation is open to the public and should be fun for all ages.

Distribution of food will be Oct. 9 in Winsted

WINSTED, MN – The distribution date for food and product for those who have previously registered is Thursday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
This program is sponsored by Common Cup Ministries and the McLeod County Emergency Food Shelf. The locations are the Winsted American Legion building and Linden Wood Apartments. The Linden Wood site is only for residents of the apartments. Please bring a box or laundry basket to collect the food.
