Self-confessed “English junkie” and country girl Sara Butterfass, 18, of Howard Lake has been working hard as the Herald Journal intern this summer. As the intern, Butterfass writes news and feature stories, takes photographs, and works on special sections. She is shown at right with her 2001 Dodge truck, which is bought with steer money from selling cattle.
She wrote 24 biographies of Christian bands for the Higher Ground Music Festival program, and has taken pictures at various summer events, such as the Memorial Day program in Montrose, and the city celebration in Mayer.
She likes to read fiction, and has about 400 books, with hardly room for them all, she said.
Sara is the daughter of Dennis and Nancy Butterfass, who operate a dairy farm south of Howard Lake. They milk about 100 Holsteins.
Before she graduated from Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in the spring, she was a member of the National Honor Society, student council, and FFA.
In FFA, she spent her first year as historian, second as the president and third (her senior year) as one of two vice presidents.
She also took football statistics for two years.
This fall, she will attend the University of Morris, with an undecided major.

MnDOT officials at the Hutchinson region office would like to provide the following roundabout driving tips for motorists.
Vehicles approaching and entering the roundabout:
• Do not stop in a roundabout except to avoid a collision.
• Slow down when entering a roundabout and be prepared to yield.
• Look to the left and check for traffic in the roundabout. Traffic already in the roundabout has the right of way.
• Enter the roundabout when there is enough space between vehicles in the roundabout.
Vehicles exiting the roundabout:
• Proceed counter-clockwise to your exit. You now have the right of way.
• As you approach the exit, use your right turn signal before exiting.
Trucks and other large vehicles:
• Roundabouts are designed to accommodate large trucks, buses, and emergency vehicles.
• Large trucks may, when necessary, drive on the raised pavement area (called the truck apron) in the center of the roundabout. Usually only the rear wheels track on the apron.
• Cars should not use the raised concrete apron.
Emergency Vehicles:
• Do not enter the roundabout when emergency vehicles are in the vicinity–pull to the side.
• Allow vehicles in the roundabout to clear in front of the emergency vehicle.
• If in the roundabout, exit the roundabout and pull to the side

United Way of McLeod County (UWMC) Board President Kathy Silvernale announced today that the organization distributed $85,000 in checks to 36 partner agencies during the month of June. Those monies represent second-half community investment grant allocations for 2008 United Way funding. An initial round of checks was delivered to agencies in January. The UWMC distributed $170,000 to partner agencies in 2008.
“We are amazed by the generosity of the individual donors, small businesses and corporations throughout McLeod County that enable us to make these community investment grants,” said Silvernale. “We want to thank everyone who contributed to the 2007 campaign, because those dollars are being used to fund worthy programs that are making a difference in so many lives in our area at this time.”
The UWMC supports programs in the areas of: emergency and basic needs, health and human services, child development and community development. The county-wide chapter of the United Way funds programs that support the organization’s mission of impacting the needs of McLeod County by building stronger, healthier communities.
Donations to help fund partner agencies and programs supporting area residents can be sent to the United Way of McLeod County located at 218 Main Street South, Suite 124, PO Box 504, Hutchinson, MN 55350. At the HLWW school board meeting last Monday, there was a brief discussion about schools change from disposal plates to reusable plates. In the past, each student threw away at least one plate per day, and two per day if the student ate breakfast at school. An enormous amount of waste was produced daily because of this.
The cost of disposable plates is lower than it would be to hire a dishwasher, however there are other costs when such a large amount of waste is produced. Having so much garbage was encouraging dumpster diving and the cost of garbage removal was higher. Supt. George Ladd also mentioned that using reusable plates set a good example for the students, as the HLWW schools promote recycling.
