Mary Koester, 81

Mary Teresa Rose Koester passed away peacefully at home February 21, 2022, a few short hours shy of her eighty-second birthday.
Born to Henry and Rose Laxen in Winsted, MN on February 22, 1940. She grew up on the family farm and moved to Green Lake, MN in 1964, where she enjoyed the next 57 years on the lake.
Mary worked several years for Barton Sand and Gravel as a Weigh-Master and she ultimately retired from the Cambridge State Hospital in 1997 where she worked in food services.
She and her partner, Gene, spent more than twenty years wintering at their Englewood, FL home.
Mary is survived by her son: Kurt and grandchildren: Jacob and Megan; brother: Vincent (Cecile) Laxen; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her son: Scott; parents; four brothers: Raymond, Herman, Mickey, Tom; and one sister: Marcella Weibel

Cpt. David Haappala, 84

Captain David R. Haapala died peacefully in his home in Eden Prairie on Friday morning, December 10, 2021 at St. Croix Hospice. Funeral is scheduled for Dassel Covenant Church, on Friday May 20. Funeral notice: Emmert Schroeder, 100

Emmert F. Schroeder, age 100, of New Germany, Minnesota, passed away Monday, May 9, 2022, at his home in New Germany, Minnesota.
Funeral Service was held Monday, May 16, 2022, 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Minnesota, with interment following at the church cemetery.
Visitation was held Monday, May 16, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Minnesota.

Funeral notice: George Schaar, 90, Howard Lake

George Joseph Immanuel Schaar was born under a full moon at 6:10 a.m. on Christmas Day, 1931. He was baptized Jan. 1, 1932. He was the third child of John and Lillie (Kettenacker) Schaar. He grew up on a farm between Rockford and Buffalo in rural Wright County. George went to a one-room country school (district 40) through eighth grade and graduated from Rockford High School in 1949. In 1952,
Uncle Sam called George to two years of Army service during the Korean War. While in the service, he married the love of his life Patricia A. Hayes of Delano, Minnesota.
After his military service, they moved back to Delano to start their lives. Upon arrival, George got a job as an electric diesel operator and lineman at the Delano Power Plant. He worked there for 20 years, with varying side jobs such as school bus driving, part-time police work, captain on the Delano Fire Department, and firearm safety instructor. Later, he worked part-time as a police officer for Maple Lake and Howard Lake.
George went on to be the police chief of Howard Lake for five years. George then worked as a lieutenant for the armed security at the Monticello Nuclear Power Plant for two years. He also worked at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis for two years, being sworn in as a deputy US marshal by US judge Miles Ford.
Following his time as a marshal, George worked as an undercover operator for a private security company.
Failing healthy prompted him to retire and help his wife Pat with her home daycare business.
George passed away May 5, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Tim Schaar; grand-daughter Angela Schaar; great-grand-daughter Peyton Hamill; sister Irma Tombers; brothers John (Ann) Schaar, Walter (Sandy) Schaar, and Marvin Schaar;
George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Pat; children Steven (Michelle), Susan (John) Hamill, Rita Decker (Robert Brown), and Vanessa (Matt) Zimmerman; daughter-in-law Chris Schaar; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2022, Church of St. Mary, Waverly, MN. Visitation 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. prayer service in St. Mary’s Parish Center. Visitation will continue on Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to Mass.

Funeral announcement: Sandra Smith, 73

Sandra Smith, of Kingston passed away peacefully on April 23, 2022. A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. on June 4 at the Kingston Apostolic Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, Sandra’s wishes were for donations to be made to the Kingston Veterans park. Checks can be made out to the city of Kingston Veterans Park and mailed to; Julie Orn, 72283 CSAH 27 – Dassel, MN 55325.

Dan Holje, 79

A memorial service for Dan Holje will be Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Lunch will be served following the service at the Dassel History Center. Holje died Nov. 26, 2021. Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
