HL Watershed Alliance and Sportsmen’s Club clean out culverts

HLHOWARD LAKE, MN – The Howard Lake Watershed Alliance and Sportsmen’s Club shared in the cost of clearing the culvert which runs under the railroad tracks and US Highway 12, on the south shore of Howard Lake.

“If we would have waited to be funded, it wouldn’t have gotten done in my lifetime, so we took it upon ourselves to do it,” Rod Werner, Howard Lake Watershed Alliance member, told the Howard Lake City Council at its May 1 meeting.

Winsted downtown forum helps sort out musts, shoulds, coulds

winWINSTED, MN – More than 30 people participated in brainstorming exercises to generate ideas for improving Winsted’s downtown during a three-hour forum April 30.

The event was organized by the Winsted Downtown Vibrancy Task Force, which was appointed by the city council Jan. 17.

A clear upgrade in LP water

The city’s new water treatment facility has been up and running since April 17, and many residents have already noticed a difference.

Shape and Style in Howard Lake gets new look

shapeHOWARD LAKE, MN – Shape and Style hair salon in Howard Lake received a makeover in the last year, including fresh wall coverings, new flooring, and new stations for the hair stylists.

Also added to the salon were tanning beds, and a massage therapist. All of the women who work at Shape and Style rent their stations and are self-employed.

“We’ve gotten a lot of nice comments about how it looks in here now,” said Candy Cardinal, one of the stylists.

The women have many years of experience in the business, including Patty Lehner, 26 years; Cardinal, 40 years; Joan Keskey, 31.5 years; Jenny Hatrick (masssage therapy), 11 years; and, Michelle Hofer, 26 years. Keskey is the newest member of the salon, coming from Sheer Image Design in Montrose.

Lester could become official Minnesota State Soil

lesterLESTER PRAIRIE, MN – The name “Lester” – as in Lester Prairie – could soon be immortalized for the soil upon which the city is built, and which can be found on farms in the surrounding area.

Tuesday, the Minnesota House voted to name Lester soil the official state soil.

If approved by the governor, Lester soil would join 16 other state symbols, including the state bird (common loon); gemstone (Lake Superior agate); flower (pink and white lady slipper);  the state tree (red or Norway pine), the state drink (milk); and the state muffin (blueberry).
