Man injured in Waverly house fire

WAVERLY, MN – At about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Waverly Fire Department and the Wright County Sheriff’s Office were called to a fire at the home of Adrian and Anita Duske, 304 2nd St. N. in Waverly.

Adrian was transported to the Buffalo Hospital, and later transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center, the Wright County Sheriff’s Office reported. The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal.

Winsted group sing-along is cure for Monday night blues

WINSTED, MN – For more than 12 years, Vonnie (Forcier) Rassat of Winsted has come to St. Mary’s Care Center Monday evenings to lead seniors in song.

With her, she brings others who enjoy spending time with St. Mary’s residents and like to sing favorite tunes as part of a sing-along group Vonnie calls “Singing Makes Me Happy.”

The seniors look forward to the musical visit and start arriving in the lounge area in plenty of time to await the group’s arrival.

Lighting project begins in Lester Prairie

LESTER PRAIRIE, MN – After months of planning and fundraising, the Bulldog Field lighting restoration project in Lester Prairie began last week. The project involves replacing the lights with brighter modern lights and renovation of the existing poles.

MAYER, MN – From intriguing J-term classes to a distinctively Christian online school, fresh ways to educate are emerging at Mayer Lutheran High School (MLHS).

Executive director Joel Landskroener welcomes the public to open houses at MLHS (305 Fifth St. NE) Saturdays, Feb. 11 and 18 from 9 a.m. to noon.

“We love it when people come to our open houses,” he said.

Visitors will have the opportunity to take a guided tour given by current students, and meet with administration and faculty members. All students who take a tour with a parent or guardian will be registered to win a Kindle Touch.

Howard Lake Fishing Derby set for Saturday, Feb. 11

HOWARD LAKE, MN – The unseasonably warm weather this winter has led many winter events to be cancelled, postponed, or changed to adapt to the conditions, and the 66th annual Howard Lake Fishing Derby is no exception.

Although the derby will still take place Saturday, Feb. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m., the events will be centered at Lions Park, rather than on the lake near Memorial Park.

Holy Trinity celebrates Catholic Schools Week

WINSTED, MN – Holy Trinity Catholic School, as well as Catholic schools throughout the nation, will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week Sunday through Saturday, Jan. 29 through Feb. 4.

The theme for 2012 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.”

“This week we observe Catholic Schools Week as a way of celebrating our parish’s long commitment to the education of young people,” Holy Trinity Pastor Fr. Tony Stubeda said.

Sixty-year trustee to retire from St. Mary’s of Czestochowa

WATERTOWN, MN – From cutting grass to keeping track of bank deposits, there isn’t much Watertown resident Walter Swartzer hasn’t done as trustee of St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church in rural Delano.

“It’s all the behind-the-scenes things that people don’t see,” fellow trustee Don Gabrelcik said. “You can work half a day on something and people don’t even know. Things just get done.”

Swartzer, who has been a volunteer trustee for 60 years, will be retiring Sunday, Feb. 5. A reception to honor his service will take place after that day’s 8:30 a.m. Mass. Refreshments will be provided.

Even as she turns 100, former HL resident still has ‘zest’ for life

HOWARD LAKE, MN – Visiting with former Howard Lake resident Maryon McCalla at her Lakeside apartment in Dassel, one would never guess she recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

Born Jan. 27, 1912, Maryon graduated high school and married her husband, Orrin, during the Great Depression.
