McLeod County declares a state of emergency in response to flooding

GLENCOE, MN — McLeod County has issued a press release in which it  declares a state of emergency in the county as a result of the ongoing flooding situation.

The press release said, “As a result of severe flooding caused by snowmelt and heavy rains, McLeod County Board Chair Paul Wright, acting on behalf of and for the people of McLeod County, declared that a state of emergency exists within McLeod County, pursuant to Minnesota Statute 12.29, and the McLeod County Emergency Management Ordinance dated September 5, 2006.

According to state statute, this declaration may not be continued for a period in excess of three days without approval of the County Board. For that reason, a Special Meeting of the McLeod County Board of Commissioners has been scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2023, to consider a resolution to extend the local declaration of a state of emergency.

Notification of this special meeting was posted on Thursday, April 20, 2023. If you have questions regarding this declaration of a state of emergency, you may call Kevin Mathews, McLeod County Emergency Management Director, at 320-864-1339.

“We want to remind everyone, ‘Turn around, don’t drown.’ Do not cross flooded roads. There’s a lot of times that we don’t know what the road is like underneath the water,” Mathews said. “And we also don’t want people to swim or wade into flood waters either. There’s a lot of debris and faster currents, and there could be sewage or chemicals in there as well. We don’t want to have to risk responders to save lives.”
