WAVERLY, MN – A bright sketch of a shooting star recently earned Humphrey Elementary third-grader Brett Poppler the title of Synergy & Leadership Exchange (Synergy) 2012 logo design winner.

Brett, the son of Harlan and Jenny Poppler of rural Waverly, will receive a check for $100, along with a framing of his original submission, onstage at the 2012 Gathering of Champions in August.

His work will also be featured on this year’s Synergy t-shirts, banners, certificates, programs, and other promotional materials and prizes.

Synergy, formerly known as the Center for Academic Excellence, is a non-profit organization committed to creating school cultures that value academic achievement while supporting development of the whole person.

Along with its new name, Synergy is also developing a new look. The logo design contest, which was open to any k-12 public, private, or homeschooled student in Minnesota, was part of that effort.

Thirty-two logo designs were received between August and December 2011. Entries were posted to the Synergy website and open to public vote through the end of January.

“Brett’s logo received more than 400 votes and was declared the winner,” Mary Hillmann of Synergy noted.

Brett drew the shooting star logo with markers, using his favorite two colors – cherry red and bluish purple.

“I like stars,” he said.

Brett first heard about the contest last year, after he was selected by Synergy as a Minnesota Academic All-Star.

“He was chosen for making a big improvement in his academics,” Jenny said, adding that he was nominated by second-grade teacher Leah Jenzen.

Brett’s favorite subject is science. When he’s not in school, he enjoys helping feed cows on his family’s farm. His younger siblings include Halli, Dani, and Shayne.

According to a Synergy press release, Academic All-Star students may include top academic achievers, students who have made a dramatic improvement in their academic work or achievement, and the top finishers in academic challenges and competitions at a regional or higher level endorsed by the Minnesota Academic League Council.
Brett and this year’s Academic All-Stars will be honored at the Gathering of Champions Friday, Aug. 3 at Nickelodeon Universe in the Mall of America. Last year, nearly 4,000 people attended the statewide gathering.
