BOYS GOLF: Delano fifth at final two WCCE meets; Oja is all-conference

NEW PRAGUE — The boys of the Wright County Conference enjoyed a tight team contest at New Prague Golf Course Tuesday, in what was the conference finale.

Waconia won the New Prague meet easily with 301 strokes. The battle was for second place, as the next four teams all finished within six strokes of each other.

Holy Family claimed second with 320 strokes. Then came New Prague (322), Orono (324) and Delano (326).

Hutchinson finished sixth with 336 strokes.

Waconia was led by Joe Adams’ even-par 72. That was good for the medalist honor by two strokes.

Orono’s Aaron Kuznik finished second with a 74.

Delano’s James Ylitalo slotted himself in fifth place with a 77.

The other Tigers who contributed to the team score were Trevor Oja (80), Joe Scheck (84) and Will Scheck (85).

Also for Delano, Jake Oja shot an 87, and Brad Pinoniemi carded a 90.

Trevor Oja’s round at New Prague gave him the last all-conference spot in the final standings. He finished ninth with a 77.3 average and 232 strokes.

Ylitalo snuck into an honorable mention spot. For the season, he finished 15th with a 79.3 average and 238 strokes.

Delano’s other WCCE standings qualifiers were Will Scheck (24th, 84, 252), Joe Scheck (26th, 84.7, 254), Jake Oja (27th, 85.3, 256) and Jack Horsch (39th, 100.3, 301).

Delano finished fifth in the final team standing with 1,317 strokes.

Waconia is the team champion with 1,196 strokes.

Waconia’s ace, Connor Glynn, is the individual champion with a 71.3 average and 214 strokes.

Glynn shot a 75 Tuesday at New Prague.

The conference part of the season is over, but Delano has several meets remaining before the section tournament.

Delano will play in the two-day Dassel-Cokato Invitational Friday morning and the morning of Monday, May 20, at Oakdale Golf Course in Hutchinson. On Wednesday of next week, the Tigers are hosting the Delano Invitational at Pioneer Creek.

The Section tournament is Thursday, May 30, and Monday, June 3, at Pebble Creek in Becker.

WCCE-Holy Family

JORDAN — Delano finished fifth with 335 strokes at Ridges at Sand Creek May 9 during Holy Family’s Wright County Conference East meet.

James Ylitalo’s 80 led the Tigers.

Trevor Oja pitched in an 81, and Joe Scheck and Jake Oja contributed a pair of 87s.

Will Scheck and Jack Horsch’s pair of 91s did not make Delano’s cut.

New Prague’s Henry Geiger was the meet medalist with a 71.

Waconia won the team portion with 298 strokes.
