VFW-sponsored audio/essay contest begins

WINSTED, MN – Lake Mary VFW Auxiliary, Winsted is sponsoring an audio/essay contest.
“Voice of Democracy” is open to the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students enrolled in public, private, parochial, and home schooled children in the US. Previous Voice of Democracy first-place winners and foreign exchange students are not eligible.
The 2008-09 theme for this year’s Voice of Democracy audio/essay contest is “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefit Today’s Youth.”
Students must record a three to five minute essay on a cassette tape or CD based on this year’s theme and label the cassette or CD with their name.

Howard Lake royalty visits Northfield

NORTHFIELD, MN – Honorary Jr. Ambassador McCall Kleve, Queen Brittney Utne, and Princess Jackie Randall of the Howard Lake royalty, visited the town of Northfield last month during “The Defeat of Jesse James Days” celebration. The celebration is about the failed attempt to rob the Northfield bank by the James-Younger Gang.

Stacey Heaver benefit set for Oct. 18 in Howard Lake

HOWARD LAKE, MN – A beer bust, silent auction along with deejay and karaoke are planned for the Stacey Heaver benefit Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Howard Lake Municipal from noon to 1 a.m.

Proceeds will be used for Heaver’s medical bills due to surgery.

Lumber stolen in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, MN – The McLeod County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a theft in which 266 2×4s, each approximately 8.75 inches long, were taken from an address on Adams Street in Hutchinson.
The total value of the lumber is $635.74.

Second-half property taxes due Oct. 15

WRIGHT COUNTY, MN – Wright County property owners are reminded that second-half property taxes for most properties are due Wednesday, Oct. 15.
The exception to the Oct. 15 due date are properties classified as agricultural, and manufactured home personal property taxes, which are not due and payable until Nov. 15. Please note: if you own multiple properties, some payments may be due Oct. 15, and some may be due Nov. 15. Please check each of your tax statements for the proper due date.
