MnDOT officials at the Hutchinson region office would like to provide the following roundabout driving tips for motorists.
Vehicles approaching and entering the roundabout:
• Do not stop in a roundabout except to avoid a collision.
• Slow down when entering a roundabout and be prepared to yield.
• Look to the left and check for traffic in the roundabout. Traffic already in the roundabout has the right of way.
• Enter the roundabout when there is enough space between vehicles in the roundabout.
Vehicles exiting the roundabout:
• Proceed counter-clockwise to your exit. You now have the right of way.
• As you approach the exit, use your right turn signal before exiting.
Trucks and other large vehicles:
• Roundabouts are designed to accommodate large trucks, buses, and emergency vehicles.
• Large trucks may, when necessary, drive on the raised pavement area (called the truck apron) in the center of the roundabout. Usually only the rear wheels track on the apron.
• Cars should not use the raised concrete apron.
Emergency Vehicles:
• Do not enter the roundabout when emergency vehicles are in the vicinity–pull to the side.
• Allow vehicles in the roundabout to clear in front of the emergency vehicle.
• If in the roundabout, exit the roundabout and pull to the side

In an emergency meeting this morning, the Wright County Board, in response to a request from the sheriff’s department, authorized signatures on an inter-governmental agreement to send deputies to Iowa to provide security in flood-damaged areas near Cedar Rapids. After the meeting, Chief Deputy Joe Haggerty said soon after he put out the call for volunteers, more deputies stepped forward than he could use. Six Wright County deputies will leave Wednesday morning for a one-week assignment.
Despite recent rains and other minor delays, the Highway 7 construction project remains mainly on track Knife River project manager Ron Hall said Wednesday. Hall said crews were hauling the last of the gravel to the Carver County Road 10 roundabout, and installation of curb and gutter was expected to begin last week.
The Winstock Country Music Festival always brings a lot of traffic to the Winsted area, and managing that traffic was discussed during Wednesday’s Highway 7 project update meeting at the Hollywood Ranch House. Traffic from both the east and west using the official detour will be routed along Highway 212. To get from there to Winsted, traffic will be funneled up McLeod County Road 1 through Lester Prairie. This could result in longer than usual backups at Highway 7. Continue reading ‘Detour could be a challenge during Winstock weekend’

One man is dead and another is injured as the result of a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Hollywood Township The driver, Chad R. Bruggemeier, 34, of Mayer was dead at the scene, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. His passenger, Joseph R. Hendricks, 28, of Winsted, was transported to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia with non-life threatening injuries. Bruggemeier’s vehicle, a 2003 Chevy Silverado, was traveling westbound on Carver County Road 122, when it left the roadway, hit a driveway approach, and rolled twice before coming to rest on a switch box owned by McLeod Cooperative Power. The Carver County Sheriff’s office received a call shortly before 1:30 a.m. and responded to the scene on Carver County Road 122, about one mile east of Carver County Road 33. Bruggemeier was dead at the scene, but emergency crews had to wait more than two hours for employees from the power company to arrive to turn off power to the equipment before it was safe to extract him from the vehicle, according to Carver County Sheriff Bud Olson. The New Germany Fire Department and the Minnesota State Patrol also responded to the incident.
Motorists crossing Highway 7 will need to use extra caution in the days ahead. The temporary stop signs on Highway 7 at the intersections with McLeod County Road 1, McLeod County Road 9, and Carver County Road 33 will soon be removed, according to MnDOT representative Kelly Brunkhorst. She said new signs will be placed on these crossroads indicating that traffic on Highway 7 does not stop. The intersection of Highway 7 and Highway 25 in Carver County will remain a four-way stop for now, Brunkhorst said.
Highway 7 is closed to through-traffic from Silver Lake to St. Bonifacious, but this does not mean that motorists crossing the road do not need to stop.
MnDOT representative Kelly Brunkhorst said there are a lot of trucks running on Highway 7 now, and accidents caused by motorists who do not stop at Highway 7 have been reported at intersections including the ones at McLeod County Road 1, McLeod County Road 9, and Carver County Road 33.
During Wednesday’s project update meeting at the Hollywood Ranch House, Brunkhorst expressed safety concerns about the situation, and asked the Carver County Sheriff’s office to be on the lookout for motorists who fail to stop before crossing Highway 7.
