As the kids are heading back to school and the weather is getting cooler, many sewers across the country are picking up their needles and starting on some new projects. From quilting to cross stitch, knitting to needlework, sewing creates great family heirlooms or adds a bit of color and interest to a home or wardrobe.
For some, sewing is a livelihood, but for most its a passion. Sewing is often referred to as a dying art, but this doesn’t seem to be true, as a trend of younger stitchers is coming on the scene. Its not so uncommon to see young knitters in coffee shops with their friends.
It is also becoming more common for friends to form sewing groups, that are similar to book clubs, only with sewing as the activity. It allows for great chats over a cup of tea and is a great way to unwind.
A few great project ideas for fall are Christmas Ornaments, embroidered linens, fast and easy kids clothes such as jumpers and fleece pullovers, scarves, hats, cross-stitched pictures
To start, head down to a sewing store and you will most likely have no problem finding a “how to” book and all the supplies you need.
Does anyone have any good projects underway or more suggestions?
At the Howard Lake Waverly-Winsted school board work session last Monday, the board acknowledged its need for input from the community regarding the upcoming decision to either remodel the current middle school building in Howard Lake or to build new. The needed updates are now estimated to cost $9 million, which would exceed the cost of building new. Continue reading ‘HLWW School Board is waiting for answers’
Stress causes something that is often referred to as a “fight-or-flight” reaction, which causes our body’s raid and automatic switch into “high gear”. Energy, speed, concentration and agility are heightened which helps us deal with a physical threat and the adrenal glands release a surge of hormones throughout the body. Travel over Canadian and Mexican borders won’t be as easy as it used to be after June of 2009. Verbal verification of citizenship will no longer be enough to get across the border. Starting June of 2009, travelers will be required to present either a traditional passport or a “passport card” (a new form of ID which will denote the traveler’s identity as well as citizenship). The passport card will only be valid for travel on land or sea, not for air travel.
These changes are being put into place in an attempt to make borders more secure, but the concern is that it will discourage travel across borders.
Another big change in air travel that has already been put into place now requires every non-US citizen to undergo a retinal eye scan and to be fingerprinted.

At the HLWW school board meeting last Monday, there was a brief discussion about schools change from disposal plates to reusable plates. In the past, each student threw away at least one plate per day, and two per day if the student ate breakfast at school. An enormous amount of waste was produced daily because of this.
The cost of disposable plates is lower than it would be to hire a dishwasher, however there are other costs when such a large amount of waste is produced. Having so much garbage was encouraging dumpster diving and the cost of garbage removal was higher. Supt. George Ladd also mentioned that using reusable plates set a good example for the students, as the HLWW schools promote recycling.
