The Howard Lake police department reported Jan 22 about the use and effectiveness of its K-9 program. In 2007 the dogs performed traffic related sniffs, school sniffs, residential/commercial sniffs, agency assists and training sessions, totaling 71 uses. One use that wasn’t mentioned in the Herald Journal Jan. 28 article is how police dogs enhance the image of law enforcement officers. Almost everyone loves them, especially kids. Americans admire the dogs’ intelligence and how they help police officers enforce the law. Kids who grew up fearing police, learn police officers really are their friends when they interact with an officer and his K-9 assistant.
