MYSTERY, MN – The Herald Journal web site is hosting a weekly Internet mystery photo contest in which a photo is taken of something in the area.
Anyone who correctly guesses the identity of the photo is added to a monthly drawing for a free subscription to the newspaper.
Go ahead and guess! Those who guess correctly first receive bragging rights only.
Answers may be e-mailed to Lynda Jensen at news@heraldjournal.com or sent by mail. No phone calls, please.
We’ll publish the correct answer – and the name of the person who first identifies the mystery photo – in next week’s Herald Journal.
Munson’s old elevator in Howard Lake comes down

HOWARD LAKE, MN – The old Munson’s Feeds elevator complex located just south of the Wright County Fairgrounds was torn down Wednesday through Friday of this week.
“The tallest and last section came down at 10:17 a.m today (Friday, July 31),” said Howard Lake resident George Schaar.
The elevator hasn’t been used since 2002, according to Munson Lakes Nutrition General Manager John Zander.
County schedules temporary road closure north of Howard Lake

HOWARD LAKE, MN – Monday, Aug. 3 through Thursday, Aug. 6, weather permitting, a section of Wright County Road 6 north of Howard Lake and approximately .6 miles north of Wright County Road 35 will be closed.
The targeted area is four miles north of Howard Lake and one mile south of Albion Center.
The closure is for the replacement of a culvert under the road, according to Wright County Highway Engineer Wayne Fingalson.
“The closing will begin at approximately 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3 and end at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, weather permitting,” Fingalson said.
A detour will be posted.
New event to be at Wright Co. Fair

HOWARD LAKE, MN – A new event is being planned at the Wright County Fair, a Straw Bale Throw and Buffalo Chip Kicking Contest.
The event will take place Sat., Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. near the Lumberjack Championships, with registration for the contest at 5:30 p.m.
The event will feature several local dignitaries such as politicians, county commissioners, members of police departments, county sheriff, and more.
The straw bale throw will be judged based on distance, from the best of three throws.
The buffalo chip kick will be judged on accuracy, and how close it reaches the target.
There will be three divisions, men, women and kids. Members of the general public may participate to win prizes.
The event will raise cash for donations to area food shelves.

Wildcats sweep New Germany

NORWOOD, MN – The Winsted Wildcats topped the New Germany Dutchmen 4-2 Thursday night in the second game of their best-of-three playoff series.
With that win, the Wildcats advance to the Region 7C tournament, which will take place in Glencoe starting Saturday, Aug. 8.
Winsted will play at either 1 or 4 p.m. in the opening game of regions, depending on what happens in the seeding game, which will take place either Sunday, Aug. 2 or Monday, Aug. 3 in Winsted. The date will be finalized after the Watertown/Glencoe game tonight (Friday) is concluded.
State water skiing tournament set for this weekend in New Germany

NEW GERMANY, MN – The Minnesota State Barefoot Tournament will take place this weekend in New Germany, according to Trophy Lake Estates developer Grant Hustad. The event, sponsored by the Minnesota Barefooters Association, is the first state tournament to take place at Trophy Lake Estates iV, a new development that is being built in New Germany for water sport enthusiasts. The event, featuring barefoot water skiing, will take place Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2 starting at 8 a.m. Trophy Lake Estates is located north of 62nd Street and west of Carver County Road 33 in New Germany.
