ffa2HOWARD LAKE, WAVERLY, WINSTED, MN – To no one’s surprise, the FFA chapter from Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted once again brought home hardware from state competition recently.

The competition took place at the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus April 26-28.

Student Crystal Jones landed the state FFA treasurer position, which is only one of six officers positions in the state, Weninger noted.

Justin Crowley was given the Star in Agribusiness award. “This is one of four stars in the state,” Weninger said.
Two teams, Parliamentary Procedure and Nursery Landscape, will advance to nationals this October, which will be in Indianapolis, he added.

“We sent 37 members,” Weninger said.  He accompanied the students, along with chaperones Pat and Tony Bakeberg, and Janell Koch.
The students managed to score the following accomplishments (see below for a complete breakdown):
• the FFA-ers won three state contests,
• won three proficiency awards,
• On a statewide level, the Best Informed Greenhand contest about FFA knowledge  beat  42 teams to win that contest.
The chapter also took fifth place for National Chapter Award.

jenniferMARSHALL, MN – Volunteers who are willing to pick up trash along the highway will be sporting a new color as they do this, since the fluorescent orange is officially being traded by the MN Department of Transportation with yellow (as shown by staff writer Jennifer Gallus, who is kind enough to model it).

The new neon yellow-green color is mandatory, with the department asking volunteers to not use orange.

Swine Influenza
State and local health officials are taking aggressive steps in response to the unusual strain of swine influenza that has been making people ill in Mexico and parts of the U.S. Here at Lester Prairie School, we are also taking extra measures to ensure students and staff are safe. Extra cleaning measures will be taken to prevent transmission of not only the swine influenza virus, but other viruses as well. Students will be instructed to observe health recommendations to prevent spreading any virus. Teachers will be reviewing with their classes the following recommendations that we encourage you to observe at home as well:

• Stay home from work, school , and errands when you are sick. You will prevent others from catching your illness.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, or cough into your elbows. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others.

• Wash your hands often to protect yourself from germs.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person ouches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

• Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, stay physically active, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious foods.

If you have questions please contact your family doctor, or by internet you can access the Minnesota Department of Health. (See attached letter from the MN Dept. of Health.)
