June 21 and 28 training is $20; registration deadline is June 10th

On June 21 and 28, Minnesota Extension 4-H will hold 4-H Livestock Judge Training for individuals interested in judging county fair 4-H livestock shows. The two all-day trainings will be held at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. On June 21, training will be held for sheep, beef, rabbit and goat judging. On June 28, training will focus on dairy, swine, poultry and lama. Read more

U of M opens new tornado related web site

University of Minnesota Extension announced today its coordinated system of online and phone answer resources available for those with tornado-related questions while cleanup efforts are underway.

A tornado devastated the northern St. Paul suburb of Hugo on May 25. Another tornado touched down in Coon Rapids, and storms downed trees and power lines across the northern suburbs. Gov. Tim Pawlenty has declared a state of emergency for Washington County. Read more

Kacie Carlsted continues to recover

Kacie Carlsted is trying to remember her senior year and is asking friends to visit her Facebook page to help her remember. For the latest updates, please visit Kacie’s Caring Bridge web site kept by her mother (click here).

Mitch was released from the hospital and is trying to adapt to a normal life. Apparently, his Caring Bridge web site has been deactivated.

Two HLWW seniors, Kacie Carlsted and Mitch Bayerl, were critically injured in a fatal car crash Wednesday and have had Caring Bridge web sites set up for them. Visitation, funeral set for Madey Kleve

Visitation for Madey Kleve has been set for Monday, June 2 at 4-8 p.m, with a 7 p.m. prayer time at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake. Funeral service is set for Tuesday, June 3 at 2 p.m., with visitation a half hour prior at the new Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School, located at County Road 6 south & 30. Arrangements are being made by Swanson-Peterson (320) 543-3401.

HLWW student killed Wednesday in traffic accident

UPDATED SUNDAY AT 9:30 P.M.

A severe car accident took place Wednesday – just days before graduation for HLWW – with four Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted seniors involved, as they returned from the section track meet on Highway 55 near Annandale.

Killed was HLWW senior Madey Kleve, 18 who was one of three candidates for Miss Howard Lake this year.

Among the injured are senior Kacie Carlsted, 18, who is a prolific dancer and also a candidate for Miss Howard Lake, who has a broken pelvis, punctured lung and facial injuries; senior Mitch Bayerl, 18, who was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, and Brie Barfknecht of Waverly, who was taken to Buffalo Hospital, treated and released.
