When I was a kid, weather reports were shown inside TV studios, where the weathercaster stood in front of a big map. When the weather forecaster said, “It’s a beautiful, sunny day,” and the viewer looked outside the window and saw pouring rain, the viewer thought the weathercaster was an idiot. Twin Cities weathercasters got smart (Paul Douglas-bless his soul) and started reporting the weather standing outside where the viewer could see their reports matched the actual conditions. Even if the weather forecaster had to hold an umbrella dripping water all over his shoes, it showed he knew what he was talking about. Today in the metro newspaper, however, a columnist must have written an article about global warming far in advance. It’s called “The heat is on - and that threatens fishing.” While I’m reading the column I’m sitting in front of a big window. It’s snowing like nuts outside, the wind is howling and it’s 28 degrees. The same newspaper is reporting the average low for April 26 is 40 degrees. How believable do you think I considered this column? Not much. Call me a global warming agnostic.
MnDOT representative Kelly Brunkhorst said that while local traffic is permitted, law enforcement officials will be ticketing drivers who attempt to use Hwy. 7 as a through-route during the construction project. Local traffic refers to drivers traveling to or from a business or residence along Highway 7. Brunkhorst said drivers should access Highway 7 at the closest possible point to their destination. Businesses are open and would welcome the support of customers during the project.
Governor Tim Pawlenty should veto a resolution passed by both houses of the Minnesota Legislature as of April 21. The resolution “supports national efforts to remove all trade, financial, and travel restrictions to Cuba.” It is silent on the suffering of the Cuban people under the brutal dictatorship of Castro. It doesn’t first call for political, legal and economic freedom for the Cuban people. I grew up in South Florida and knew firsthand Cubans who suffered under Castro. This is offensive for me. Second, this resolution is a waste of time. It is a national issue, not a Minnesota issue. As House Minority Leader Marty Seifert, R-Marshall, pointed out, the state’s budget deficit still isn’t resolved. Legislators, get back to business.
The Scott and Carver County Master Gardeners are spreading university research-based gardening information to the public and announce the summer schedule for their Help Desks. The Help Desks are free and open to the public. The public is encouraged to bring samples of insects, diseased plant materials, and plants for identification. If time allows, the Master Gardeners will also discuss plant selection and design. Continue reading ‘Master Gardeners offers help four ways’
