How will we dispose of all those fluorescent light bulbs?

US Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has been criticized by both environmentalists and Democrats for her “Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act.” The bill seeks to repeal the nationwide phase-out of conventional light bulbs, according to the March 26 Star Tribune. TV commercials add cost to prescription drugs

There are two big contributors to the high cost of health care, lawsuits and the marketing of prescription drugs directly to consumers. Previously, the only people who the pharmaceutical industry marketed prescription drugs to were doctors. Now, when we buy prescription drugs, not only are we paying for the drug’s ingredients and the research to develop the drug, but also the TV, magazine and radio commercials to advertise the drugs. McLeod Co. Dairy crowns five

mcleod-dairyweb.jpgAll five candidates for dairy princess were crowned Saturday by McLeod Co. Dairy Association, with three of the five being nominated to attend the Princess Kay of the Milky Way ceremony in late summer. Crowned were: Ashley Sprengeler of Plato, Alison Benson of Stewart, and Amber Wilkens of Plato — who are the three chosen for Princess Kay — as well as Cheryl Konerza of Silver Lake, and Kristen Sprengeler of Plato. The Butter Knife award went to the Glencoe Dairy Queen. Marian Filk was honored with the Friend of Dairy award, and the Dairy Farm Woman of the Year went to Janice Konerza.

Foreign terrorist bombing in Minnesota unlikely

Montrose Fire Chief Mike Marketon recently completed training in Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings, according to an article in the Herald Journal March 31. Teens might as well be a whole different species.

Orienteering event coming up at Lake Maria State Park

The Minnesota Orienteering Club and Lake Maria State Park will host an orienteering event Sunday, April 13, from noon to 3 p.m. for persons of all ages and skills. Club members will provide instruction for beginners at noon at the park’s nature center, and all participants must be on the orienteering course no later than 1 p.m. No pre-registration is required.

Costs for the event are $5 for club members and $8 for non-members. Participants are urged to bring their own compasses, but a limited number may be rented for a small fee.

In addition, there is a $5 park vehicle entrance fee for those without an annual permit. However, annual permits are for sale at the park office for $25. Lake Maria State Park is located on Wright County Highway 111, approximately seven miles northwest of Monticello, 10 miles northeast of Annandale or five miles north of Maple Lake.
