What’s worse, graffiti or a physical attack?

A professor of economics at the St. Cloud State University, King Banaian, found something odd last week. University officials found a marking of a swastika and a partial swastika on the inside of a stairwell in Shoemaker Residence Hall. Continue reading ‘What’s worse, graffiti or a physical attack?’

Americans love police dogs

The Howard Lake police department reported Jan 22 about the use and effectiveness of its K-9 program. In 2007 the dogs performed traffic related sniffs, school sniffs, residential/commercial sniffs, agency assists and training sessions, totaling 71 uses. One use that wasn’t mentioned in the Herald Journal Jan. 28 article is how police dogs enhance the image of law enforcement officers. Almost everyone loves them, especially kids. Americans admire the dogs’ intelligence and how they help police officers enforce the law. Kids who grew up fearing police, learn police officers really are their friends when they interact with an officer and his K-9 assistant.

So what is the state of the union?

Monday night, many of you probably watched the State of the Union Address given every year by our current president. What was peculiar about this speech compared to previous speeches was George W didn’t give us the state of our union. Maybe he was afraid since the state of our union isn’t all that great. But the state of our union is different for each individual. So my question, what do you think is the state of our union?

Have you ever seen this yellow weed?

bloom-photo-1.jpgThis week, the Wright County Board authorized Ag Inspector Ken Johnson and Kerry Saxton of the Wright County Soil and Water Conservation District to seek a grant to create a cooperative weed management area. The goal would be a cooperative effort to combat invasive species, such as buckthorn and wild parsnip.

The Big Game Sunday

The Super Bowl draws near (it’s this coming Sunday, February 3rd, for those who may have been living under a rock). Even for someone — like myself — who isn’t going to be watching, I know it is coming…

And Yes, you heard me. I will not be watching the Super Bowl this year. To some it could be considered blasphemy but I happily have other plans.

The new HLWW H.S. is looking great

hlww-sunriseweb.jpgI had the privilege of touring and taking photos of the new Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School yesterday. The school looks great and has a lot of character. The gymnasium is gorgeous and the auditorium is impressive! Of course the scenery of the surrounding farm ground is a breath of fresh air and is something, I think, students will enjoy as they sit in their classrooms. The Herald Journal is working on putting together a photo virtual tour of the new school that will be on its web site soon. The new school will open for classes Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Liners will save New Germany residents money

Bob Roepke is right about the advantages of putting a liner in New Germany’s sanitary sewer lines. Roepke advised the city council to get liners at the council meeting last week. It won’t solve all of the inflow and infiltration problems, but it helps a lot. Continue reading ‘Liners will save New Germany residents money’

Will Highway 7 resurfacing be done by Nov. 15?

MnDOT announced that work on the Highway 7 construction project is set to begin April 14 and be done by Nov. 15. I hope they will be able to stick to this timetable because road construction is extremely inconvenient for everyone. If it takes too long, it can ruin businesses along the road.
